<text>The modernist Punjabi poet Laeeq Ahmad Babree (1931-2003) is one of the most interesting lesser-known figures represented in the Archive. Babree was well-acquainted with the works of French modernists, and particularly with Baudelaire, whose Spleen de Paris he had translated by 1982 (as Paris kā karb). Babree had completed his Doctorate in French Literature at the University of Paris in 1968. After returning to Lahore, he became a professor of French at Punjab University. His correspondence with Rashed as preserved in the Archive begins in 1969.

This letter to Rashed, written on February 28, 1971, appears to have been received by Rashed on March 6, 1971. In it Babree mentions the appointment of the psychologist Makhdum Muhammad Ajmal (1919-1994) as principal of Government College, and Ajmal's willingness to invite Rashed and Faiz Ahmad Faiz to an event at G. C. in March. He is in contact with Munir Niazi, who had published Rashed's Lā=Insān in 1969; as well as with Rashed's correspondent the Urdu poet Qayyum Nazar, who was the first professor of Punjabi at Punjab University. Rashed's and Babree's shared love of French modernism made for a warm correspondence, and Babree was able to use his academic position to give the admired modernist pioneer a forum to speak at Government College, which was then in its heyday.

An abstract of the letter:

Babree has received the programme of Rashed's upcoming trip to Pakistan. The principal at Government College is Muhammad Ajmal, formerly head of the Psychology Department, for whom Babree has words of praise. Babree has suggested to Ajmal that when Rashed comes in March they should invite him to Government College. Ajmal immediately agreed, and suggested that he should be invited for March 25th. Dinner would be given by Government College and Faiz Ahmed Faiz would also be invited. Ajmal must leave Lahore for a science conference around the 28th or 29th of March.

Babree meets with Munir Niazi regularly. Two or three days ago there was a Punjabi majlis chaired by Munir Niazi. Babree believes that Punjabi is slowly being recognized as a language of the shurafā. Seven or eight years ago when he wrote his first Punjabi poetry, he was mocked. Now Punjabi has been established as a subject at Punjab University, with Qayyum Nazar teaching. Beginning tomorrow, Punjabi news will be broadcast over the Lahore-Rawalpindi-Multan national hookup radio.

When Babree had sent Rashed his Punjabi poem "Pinghoṛe", Rashed had asked him about the word "tuhoṛ," which Babree will explain when they meet. He is sending a copy of his Punjabi poem "Gāhaṛ." His Punjabi collection Ghugghū ghoṛe is about to be printed (1971). There is an inside joke in the title. Qayyum Nazar has also received Rashed's letter. He no longer works for Pakistan Council; he now works for the Textbook Board.

The collection of Punjabi poetry to which Babree refers, Ghugghū ghoṛe (Clay Horses), would be published a few months later on June 10, 1971 by the Majlis Shah Husain in Lahore. This book, which is rare in the West (the only holding appearing in Worldcat is in the British Library), had a print run of 500 copies and sold for Rs. 300.

Babree writes that the title of this collection, "Clay Horses," involved a hidden satire. A blurb pasted into the book suggests to us that the short symbolist poems it contained are each like small playthings. The symbol of the ghugghū ghoṛā or clay horse plays with the relation between silence, noise, and speech. "Ghugghū" alone means a hollow clay toy which makes a noise when blown into. But when referring to a person "ghugghū" indicates they are dumb or stupid. Thirdly there is the ghugghū ghoṛā, a mute, knobbly plaything of clay. A blurb pasted into Babree's book suggests the relationship between the title and the book: The short symbolist poems are the clay horses themselves. "Ghugghū ghoṛā" is therefore a description of Babree's poetry. How so? Supposedly poetry tries to communicate something to its audience. But Babree's poetry, in keeping with symbolist precepts, presents the reader with its mute texture and its sound, attempting to withhold the kernel of Meaning. Babree knew the symbolist movement well. Apart from his thorough familiarity with Baudelaire, another evidence of this is his participation in the Société de Symbolisme's May 1966 conference in Paris on "Symbolism and Language."

We thank Babree's wife, Khalida L. Babree, for her kindness in providing us with a copy of Ghugghū ghoṛe, which has been deposited in the Islamic Studies Library at McGill, along with other materials to aid our research on Laeeq Babree, his literary work and his relation to Rashed.</text>

Handwritten aerogramme from Mughni Tabassum to Rashed, sent to P.O Box 1555 in Tehran. Mughni Tabassum informs Rashed that ' Noon Meem Rashed' has been published and he is sending two copies with the letter. He asks Rashed if he would want to send copies to Karachi, Lahore or anywhere else and also informs him that copies have been sent to all addresses in different countries that he had mentioned. He also expresses his sorrow over Rashed not being able to come to Hyderabad and mentions that he is planing to publish the fourth editon of 'Shi`r o Hikmat' either by the end of March or start of April. He wants Rashed to publish his long poem (Guman ka mumkin?) in this issue. The letter is further continued on another page whereby Mughni Tabassum expands on how the 'N.M Rashed' publication, due to many limitations and complications, hasn't turn out the way he expected or wanted it to be. He apologies in regard to this. He goes on to state that because he couldn't get a hold of 'Iran men ajnabi' and' La = insan', he couldn't write an essay on Rashed's poetry. However, he claims to have written an analysis of Rashed's poem ' Mujhe wida` kar' instead. However, he states his desire of writing a dissertation on Rashed and his poetry, also asking for permission. He further requests for all information that will help him with writing the essays. In end, he informs that he would let Shahryar know about Rashed's change of plans. On the right corner of the letter, he briefly notes that he will be sending Rashed's materials and pictures in a few days. Urdu. Box 2. Folder 8: Letters of publishers and writers. 076. He wishes Rashed good health and expresses happiness over Rashed’s plan to visit Hyderabad. He mentions he has been communicating with Aal-e Sarwar, Shahryar and Shamsur Rahman Faruqi regarding organizing a conference for contemporary poets as part of Rashed’s visit to India. The conference would either be in Aligarh, Lucknow or Hyderabad and Tabassum would start planning it once Rashed confirms the trip. He suggest Ritz hotel for the stay at Hyderabad but a different arrangement can also be made. He agrees that Saleem Ahmad’s essay in his book from page 24-41 is related to Rashed’s poetry so he would give it to the copyist. All the received essays have been copied. Dr. Alam Khundmiri, Khalilur Rahman Azmi and Shamsur Rahman Faruqi’s essays are left and they have promised to submit them by 15th November. Once these are received and copied, the journal would be sent to print. Tabassum also rewrites some of the names to confirm if he got them right. These are Rashed and his children’s names. In the end, he mentions that he couldn’t read the underlined word behind one of his photos. Urdu. Box 2. Folder 8: Letters of publishers and writers. 083. Digitized by Zahra Sabri. In the end, he mentions that he couldn’t read the underlined word behind one of his photos.</text>

<text>Several letters from Rashed to his family members are preserved in the Archive. This one, to the donor of the Archive, Rashed's second daughter Yasmin Hassan, dates from the early years of Yasmin and her husband Faruq Hassan's life in Canada. Two major events in Rashed's life are mentioned here. His third book of poetry, Lā = Insān, has been published by Munir Niazi's press, proving to the younger poets of Pakistan that Rashed is alive and well, as he triumphantly writes ("yih na'ī paud ke shā'ir mujhe qarīb qarīb marhūm o maghfūr samajh chuke the"). Secondly, for the first time Rashed has become a grandfather—he professes that this an odd feeling ("shāyad ab dāṛhī rakhnā paṛe!")

A summary of the aerogramme is below:

From: N.M. Rashed, Tehran P.O. Box 1555, Tehran, Iran. Written 05/07/1969.
To: Mr. and Mrs. Farooq Hassan, 601 Beaverbrook Street, apt. 4, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Replied 06/23.
NMR writes from Tehran that he has received Yasmin Hassan's letter of 26 April, 1969. Yasmin and Faruq Hassan are now renting a new accomodation in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Congratulates Yasmin on becoming an aunt. NMR confesses that it feels strange to be a grandfather. His correspondence with his son Shahryar has been very rushed on the latter's side recently. NMR has written for the second time to Munir Niazi asking him to send the Hassans 1 copy each of the 3 recently published books. Says that Yasmin should write directly to Saddan Khan, who has been looking for her pass-book in Karachi and may have found it by now. NMR sent some money to Yasmin in March.
NMR asks whether Faruq Hassan is still writing his "Chhotī barī nazmeñ." Lā = Insān has created quite a stir in Pakistani literary circles. NMR believes that the younger poets had assumed that he had practically passed away already. Seeing the new poetry, poets like Iftikhar Jalib have had to admit that he is very much alive, side-by-side with the new generation. Lā = Insān is receiving good reviews in the newspapers and periodicals. It has been emphasized to Tamzin that she should write to Yasmin soon. However Tamzin's exams are approaching in June.
In 1969, Rashed's second daughter Yasmin Hassan and her husband Faruq Hassan were living in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Faruq Hassan had begun a Masters degree in English Literature at the University of New Brunswick. Yasmin and Faruq had been living in a shared accomodation with a landlady since they had arrived. Rashed congratulates them on their moving to their own apartment, at 601 Beaverbrook St., apt. 4, bordering the University to the north-east. Yasmin Hassan describes this apartment as follows:

601 Beaverbrook was our first apartment which had two small bedrooms, living room, kitchen and our own washroom.[1]
Yasmin Hassan's husband Faruq Hassan was himself a poet, and in 1967 he had published a volume of Urdu poetry entitled Chhoṭī baṛī nazmeñ (with Gilani Kamran; Lahore: Kitābiyāt). Rashed asks after Faruq Hassan with great fondness, referring to him as usual as ‘azīzī Fārūq. In 1969 Rashed's third daughter Shahin Sheikh had her son Omer, Rashed's first grandchild. The youngest sister from Rashed's first marriage, Tamzin, is also mentioned at the end of the letter.

This was the year of the publication of Rashed's third collection of poetry, Lā = Insān. It was published by Munir Niazi's press Al-Misāl, who also reprinted Rashed's two previous collections, Māwarā and Īrān meñ ajnabī. These are the three books that Rashed orders for the Hassans from Niazi.

1 Yasmin Hassan, Email to Pasha M. Khan, June 26, 2015.
</text>
